David Fravor and the Tic Tac Incident
A Navy commander, four eyewitnesses, one unexplained object, and the still-unresolved question of what really happened over the Pacific in 2004.
The Man Behind the Stick
In 1969, a five-year-old boy watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon and told his mother he was going to be a pilot. The people who knew him — a self-described "bit of a delinquent" — told him he'd end up in jail.
Not a UFO Enthusiast — a Top Gun Graduate
David Fravor went from enlisted Marine to the Naval Academy. He earned his wings, graduated from the Navy Fighter Weapons School — Top Gun, Class 497, 1997 — and by 2004 commanded Strike Fighter Squadron 41, the Black Aces. Twelve aircraft. Several hundred people. One of the Navy's premier fighter units. His callsign was Nuts.
This matters because the Tic Tac story's weight doesn't come from the mystery. It comes from who was there. Four trained naval aviators with thousands of flight hours, flying the most advanced carrier-based fighter in the world, and every one of them saw something none of them could explain.
Think Fast, Decide Faster
Fighter pilots train for a world where the 80% solution is good enough. Overthink and you're behind. "If you overthink it, you're behind, and in an air-to-air fight, that's what happens." Fravor's entire career trained him to observe, decide, and act in seconds — exactly the kind of person you want as an eyewitness to something inexplicable.
"What the Hell Was That?"
Fravor, Dietrich, Slaight, and the fourth aircrew member all returned to the Nimitz with the same reaction. No debrief was needed. No one had to convince anyone else. Four independent observations, one shared response.
Fravor、Dietrich、Slaight
November 14, 2004
November 10, 2004. A hundred miles off the coast of Southern California, the USS Princeton — a Ticonderoga-class cruiser with the most advanced radar system in the fleet — begins picking up something it cannot identify. Objects descending from above 80,000 feet. Hovering at 20,000 feet for hours. Then climbing back up. Every day. For nearly two weeks.
Real-World Tasking
November 14. The Nimitz carrier strike group is running training exercises. VFA-41, the Black Aces, are airborne on a routine mission when the Princeton cancels the exercise.
Two F/A-18Fs launch toward the contact. In the lead jet: Commander David Fravor (pilot) and Lieutenant Commander Jim Slaight (WSO). In the wing jet: Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich (pilot) and her WSO. They carry only CATM-9 training missiles — blue tubes, no warheads. Nobody expected live ordnance on a training day off San Diego.
Churning White Water
As they reach merge plot — the fighters and the contact inside the same radar cell — the pilots go visual. A clear day. Unrestricted visibility. No clouds, no whitecaps. Deep blue Pacific to the horizon.
Fravor looks down. Below him, on the ocean surface, a patch of churning white water — roughly the size of a 737 fuselage — as if something large were submerged 15 to 20 feet below, causing waves to break in a cross pattern.
Smooth, White, Tic Tac-Shaped
Just above the white water: a white object. Forty feet long. No wings. No rotors. No exhaust. No windows. No visible propulsion.
It moves north-south. Then east-west. Then reverses. Left, right, left, right — with no deceleration between changes. No inertia. No pause.
Fravor descends to investigate. Dietrich stays at altitude — a god's-eye view. As Fravor drops toward the object, the Tic Tac reorients its longitudinal axis.
It recognizes his presence. It mirrors his descent — coming up toward him.
The Engagement
交锋
Two F/A-18Fs. One unknown object the size of a school bus. No live weapons. No idea what they're looking at.
It Matched His Every Move
Fravor decides to engage. Standard two-circle fight maneuver — the same BFM he taught at Top Gun. He cuts across the circle to close distance on the object.
The Tic Tac accelerates across the circle. It anticipates his move and beats him to the intercept point.
"It mirrored me. It wasn't aggressive. It just mirrored us. As we're coming out, it's just like... you know, you see wrestlers when they get out on the mat? They're kind of feeling each other out. It was doing that same thing."
Then, as Fravor closes distance, the object decides it's done. It accelerates away — not in a direction, but in a way that no known aircraft can achieve. From near-hover to gone.
Tic Tac
The Helmet Camera That Was Never Turned On
Fravor's F/A-18F had a helmet-mounted camera. But its fish-eye footage is disorienting to watch, so nobody turns it on during training. "The one thing I didn't do is reach down and hit the switch." No radar lock either — the APG-73 could not acquire the object. Four eyewitnesses, zero gun-camera footage from the visual encounter.
The Other Witnesses
Four sets of eyes. Four independent observations. Same object. Same description.
Cmdr. David Fravor
David Fravor 中校
The lead pilot. 18-year Navy career. Top Gun graduate. Commanding officer of VFA-41. Descended to investigate, engaged the object, watched it mirror his maneuvers and accelerate away. Primary eyewitness.
Lt. Cmdr. Jim Slaight
Jim Slaight 少校
Fravor's WSO (Weapon Systems Officer). Same cockpit, same vantage point. Saw the same object, the same churning water, the same impossible movement.
Lt. Cmdr. Alex Dietrich
Alex Dietrich 少校
Wing pilot, 8,000 feet above Fravor. A completely different altitude and viewing angle — making it impossible for both pilots to share an optical illusion. She watched from above as Fravor's jet and the object interacted. Corroborated: this was a physical thing, not a light, not a projection.
Lt. Cmdr. Chad Underwood
Chad Underwood 少校
Launched after Fravor and Dietrich returned. Didn't see the object visually at altitude, but his ATFLIR pod captured the video in both infrared and visible-light modes — the recording that would become one of three Pentagon-released UAP videos. Fravor and Dietrich reviewed the tape: "That's it. That's exactly what we saw."
No Single Piece Tells the Story Alone
Four eyewitnesses, two radar systems, one video, two weeks of tracking. Remove any one piece and you still have a compelling story. Remove them all and you have nothing. The credibility of the Nimitz encounter is the convergence — visual, instrumental, and sustained — not any single data point.
What the Instruments Saw
Four trained aviators saw an object. Radar tracked it for weeks. Infrared cameras recorded it. The object's behavior exceeds any known technology by orders of magnitude.
Infrared and Visible Light — Same Object
Underwood's targeting pod locked onto the object in two modes. In IR: a white-hot shape against the cool ocean. In TV (visible light): the same white Tic Tac. The pod's tracking could not maintain lock — the object's acceleration exceeded the system's ability to follow. The video runs approximately 90 seconds and was declassified and released by the Pentagon in 2020.
Two Weeks of Daily Tracking
The USS Princeton's Aegis combat system tracked objects descending from above 80,000 feet, hovering at 20,000 feet for hours, and returning upward. Multiple objects. Daily. For nearly two weeks. The SPY-1 is not a hobbyist rig — it is the primary air-defense radar for an entire carrier strike group. If it says something is there, something is there.
From Hover to Gone
Based on radar data relayed by Fravor and the Princeton's operators, the objects accelerated from near-hover to near-Mach speeds in seconds. No known aircraft — not the F-22, not the SR-71, not anything on any drawing board — can accelerate from a stationary hover to near-Mach without a runway, without afterburners, without visible exhaust.
The Radar Would Not Lock
Fravor attempted to lock his APG-73 radar onto the object. The radar would not lock. Whether the object was actively jamming, passively deflecting, or simply not reflective enough for the radar's acquisition algorithms, the most sophisticated targeting system on a frontline Navy fighter could not acquire it.
The Silence
沉默
After the encounter, the Nimitz returned to normal operations. Reports were filed. And then someone came for the tapes.
The Tapes Were Taken
The original Hi-8 recordings from the ATFLIR pod were confiscated. Fravor, told they were needed, retrieved them, made two copies on brand-new tapes, and handed back the originals. Later, the copies were taken too.
The incident was not declassified for thirteen years. The Pentagon did not publicly acknowledge it until 2017, when the New York Times published a front-page story featuring Fravor's account and the ATFLIR video. The source: Luis Elizondo, who had run AATIP — the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program — a small Pentagon office investigating exactly these kinds of incidents, quietly funded and quietly shut down.
Tic Tac, Go Fast, Gimbal
Tic Tac、Go Fast、Gimbal
Three videos eventually entered the public record: Tic Tac (2004, Nimitz), Go Fast (2014–2015, East Coast), and Gimbal (2014–2015, East Coast). Each shows an object moving in ways that defy conventional explanation. The Pentagon released them with no explanation, no analysis, and no follow-up.
三段视频最终进入公众视野:Tic Tac(2004年,尼米兹号)、Go Fast(2014-2015年,东海岸)和Gimbal(2014-2015年,东海岸)。
"I Don't Like to Get Into Little Green Men"
Fravor's public stance is precise: he reports what he saw, not what he thinks it was. "I don't like to get into little green men. But I don't think people developed it." He draws the parallel with the F-117 — hidden for roughly seven years before acknowledgment — and notes that a technology this far beyond anything in any university lab or defense contractor's pipeline strains belief in a government cover-up. Not because governments don't keep secrets. Because a leap this large doesn't stay secret for this long without a single leak.
Open Sky
In 1969, a boy watched a man walk on the moon and decided to fly. That boy grew up to become one of the most credible witnesses to something the world still cannot explain. The irony is precise: a career built on understanding what flies, encountering something that shouldn't.
Something Was There
The Tic Tac incident is not a story about aliens. It is a story about evidence — and about what happens to evidence when nobody in power wants to look at it. Four trained naval aviators saw an object. Radar tracked it for weeks. Infrared cameras recorded it. The object's behavior exceeds any known technology by orders of magnitude.
And the official response was to take the tapes and tell everyone to forget it.
Something was over the Pacific on November 14, 2004. Four people who know what they're looking at saw it. The Navy's own radar watched it come from space, hover, and leave. A targeting camera filmed it. And the best answer anyone has is: we don't know.
That is not a conspiracy theory. That is a fact. And facts that nobody can explain are exactly where science begins.
Tic Tac
