New Zealand chose him as much as he chose it.

A kid who left Nigeria, grew up in New Zealand, became champion of the world — and made sure the place he came from got to hold the belt too.

When fighters get the title shot and start fighting differently, they lose. The thing that made them dangerous was their natural game. Adesanya's natural game includes dancing into the cage.

But he's also clear-eyed: the UFC used to give you a new belt each time. Now they add a ruby to the old one. Nostalgia wins, but the old system was better motivation.

He respects the idea but sees through the machinery: they needed a title for the Madison Square Garden card. The ego in him wanted one too. "But what's the point? Are they gonna defend it?"
