JRE #1554: Kanye West

"Telling the truth is crazy in a world full of lies." In October 2020, with weeks left before the election, Kanye West sat down with Joe Rogan for nearly three hours — not to promote an album, but to explain why a visionary deconstructionist should be president. What unfolds is part campaign pitch, part manifesto, part confession: a raw, looping, symphonic unspooling of one mind's attempt to rebuild civilization from scratch.

"God Put It on My Heart"

The word "visionary" gets thrown around a lot. Joe Rogan and Kanye West spend the opening minutes of this conversation renegotiating it in real time. Kanye wants a different word — one sharper, less glossy. Joe provides it: deconstructionist.

Here's what that means to Kanye: you look at a system — the music industry, the food supply, the electoral college, the church — and you don't accept it. You find the cracks. You ask why the cracks exist. Then you build the replacement.

The story starts in a shower in 2015. The idea hits: run for president. Not as a joke. "All this joy came over my body," he tells Joe. "Just through my soul." Two days later, at the MTV VMAs, accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Kanye veers off script. Instead of running through his hits, he delivers a rambling address that ends with four words: "I'm running for president in 2020."

The reaction was what you'd expect. Oprah told him to "bone up on your foreign affairs." Friends in the music industry and tech world listed "millions of reasons why I couldn't run." Kanye's response: he was $50 million in debt at the time, and he knew he'd be a billionaire by the election. He was right. "Seeing Trump win," he says, "I was like — see, you CAN win if you're coming from outside politics."

The thread that weaves through every detour in this conversation: God told him to do this. Not in the "God told me to tell you something" sense that irritates him. In the sense that Kanye experienced a calling, and the calling is service — the ultimate service being "leader of the free world."

The Contract Is a Cage

NET WORTH · MATH

Music makes him $-4 million a year.

At the time of this interview, Kanye's net worth was $5 billion. His annual cash flow was $300 million. His music income: negative $4 million a year. "Music at this point loses me money. It doesn't make me money." He is the wealthiest and most influential artist of his generation — and the music itself is a loss leader for the sneakers. He's not speaking from grievance. He's speaking from position. The industry extracts everything; the power accrues elsewhere.

MUSIC INDUSTRY · EXPLOITATION

"Artists are raped." The master is not an accident.

He compares the recording industry to Me Too. "Artists are raped," he says — not metaphorically, in his framing. The contracts are structured to extract everything and give nothing back. The parallel to American history is explicit: master is not an accidental word choice. "If I could put myself in harm's way to get my masters back — they would put themselves in harm's way to stay the master." The contract is the cage; the masters are the bars.

与美国历史的平行是明确的:master(主人/母带)这个词绝非巧合。

CONSPIRACY · RISK

Bruce Lee. Prince. Bob Marley. "Not waking up one day."

Prince。

He takes the thread darker. Bruce Lee. Brandon Lee. Michael Jackson. Prince. Bob Marley. "Not waking up one day." He believes these were not accidents. He doesn't spend long here — he knows how it sounds. "Vengeance is mine, said the Lord," he quotes, pulling himself back from the edge. But the point is about personal risk: he is willing to put himself in harm's way to change these contracts. He believes others have died for similar stands. He doesn't linger — but he doesn't unsay it.

PERSONAL COST · ENTERTAINMENT MACHINE

"I partially blame the loss of my mother on the entertainment industry."

The most personal charge he levels is against the entertainment system's attrition capacity. "I partially blame the loss of my mother on the entertainment industry," he says — the constant fighting, the media grinding down anyone who won't go with the flow, the systems designed to exhaust you until you break. Donda West died in 2007, following elective surgery. In Kanye's framing, the industry's relentless pressure created the conditions. The machine punishes resistance through exhaustion.

Sunday Service & The Gospel University

2019 · FAITH PIVOT 2019 ·

He stopped rapping. Couldn't rap for God. Started a church instead.

In 2019, Kanye West stopped rapping. He didn't know how to rap for God — all his verses had "nasty jokes," and the register didn't transfer. So he started a church instead. Sunday Service began as a weekly gathering — a choir, musicians, and Kanye funding the entire operation as "a tithe." He never missed a Sunday until COVID hit. "I wasn't saved," he admits about the first four months. "It's just I had a calling saying: go make this church."

MODEL · HOW KANYE BUILDS

Best talent + mission-aligned structure + self-funded = uncorrupted scale.

The Sunday Service format is worth understanding because it's the template for how Kanye thinks about institutional innovation: take the best talent (the finest singers gravitate to California), give them a structure they believe in (singing for God instead of a paycheck), and fund it yourself so the economics don't corrupt the mission. Then let it scale. This is the same logic he applies to DONDA, to Yeezy Christian Academy, to every system he touches: remove the corrupting incentive, protect the mission.

ALBUMS · GOSPEL PIVOT

A pastor's son asked. That became Jesus Is King. A pastor asked. That became Jesus Is Born.

The album pivots came from outside input. A pastor's son said: "I wish Yay would do a rap album about Jesus." That became Jesus Is King. A pastor named Adam suggested a choir album — that became Jesus Is Born. "There's people who that's the only album they play." Both albums originated as requests, not Kanye's own creative agenda. A pattern emerges: Kanye as the executor of other people's prayers and his own calling, not the origin of the vision itself.

这变成了《Jesus Is King》。

VISION · SCALE

200,000-seat circular stadium. 100,000 gospel singers. Training like Olympic athletes.

Sunday Service is the pilot for something much larger. Kanye envisions a 200,000-seat circular stadium with 100,000 gospel singers — a "Gospel University" where vocalists train like Russian Olympic swimmers: in the pool six days a week, conditioning their instrument with the discipline athletes bring to sport. He's writing hymns — his book of hymns for the future church. Joe's take: "You made going to church cool again." Kanye's: he's just showing up with what he has — "like the little drummer boy" — and letting God do the rest.

DONDA: Civilization, Rebuilt

DESIGN COLLECTIVE · TALENT PIPELINE

Virgil ran DONDA. Then ran Louis Vuitton. The pipeline is real.

Named after his mother, DONDA is Kanye's design and innovation collective — what he calls an extension of his brain. Virgil Abloh ran DONDA before heading Louis Vuitton. Matthew Williams, another alumnus, runs Givenchy. The talent pipeline is real and its graduates are running major fashion houses. DONDA is not a vanity project; it is a functioning institution that has already changed the shape of global design.

SCOPE · MISSION

Food. Clothing. Shelter. Communication. Education. Transportation. The entire stack.

DONDA's scope goes far beyond fashion. Kanye's mission statement covers: food, clothing, shelter, communication, education, transportation. The entire stack of civilization. Not as a metaphor — as a literal design brief. Each domain is something he believes is currently broken by the same logic that broke the music industry: the powerful made it work for themselves, then built a system that makes escape impossible for everyone else.

300 ACRES · INFRASTRUCTURE 300

A water-powered monastery in Calabasas. No solar. Mirrors on a steam engine.

He's building on a 300-acre property in Calabasas. A monastery — fully self-sustaining, water-powered, with aqueducts like the city of Masada. He doesn't want solar panels — he considers them an Edison-era compromise when Tesla had a cleaner vision. He told his engineer the whole thing needed to run on water. The engineer proposed mirrors focusing sunlight on a steam engine to push water uphill. Kanye, who had been yelling at the engineer, realized he needed to learn physics.

EDUCATION · SURVIVAL CURRICULUM

Yeezy Christian Academy: farming alongside physics. Not the kids' version.

Yeezy Christian Academy:

The school on the property — Yeezy Christian Academy — teaches farming alongside physics. Hydroponic vertical growing. Not the "kids version," he insists. "If the pandemic was — and they lost all their parents — kids need to understand early how real life works." The curriculum is premised on collapse preparedness alongside spiritual development. You learn to grow food not because it's a trend but because the system you currently depend on might not hold.

CRITIQUE · 2020 GAP

"We're 20 years past the future. It's 2020. We were supposed to be there by 2000."

His closing vision for DONDA: real life should be as immersive and wonderful as video games. "We're 20 years past the future," he says. "It's 2020. We were supposed to be in the future by 2000." The gap between what's possible and what's built is his obsession — and his indictment of the systems currently in charge. The design brief for DONDA is to close that gap, domain by domain, starting with 300 acres in Calabasas.

"They Were Trying to Kill a Superhero"

The most vulnerable stretch of the conversation begins when Joe asks the question that defines public perception of Kanye: why do people think there's something wrong with you?

"I think very three-dimensionally," Kanye responds. "I don't think in the black and white lines that I've been programmed to think in. I think in full color." When he talks, he has to describe a thought in five ways — like food with multiple seasonings, music with multiple instruments. "It's not a rant. It's a symphony of ideas."

Telling the truth is crazy in a world full of lies.

— Kanye West

Joe uses a metaphor Kanye clearly appreciates: most people interface with the world on a 20-watt charger. Kanye's running a 150-watt charger.

Then the medication story. Diagnosed bipolar. Placed on drugs that made him gain weight — then offered an alternative without weight gain, which he took as confirmation: "This shows you — they were trying to kill a superhero. Trying to kill genius." The medication, he says, "destroyed my confidence. Made me a shell of who I really am. Grayed over my eyes. Made the mustang that buck anymore."

He connects it to the "slavery is a choice" comment. He wasn't talking about literal chains — he was talking about financial contracts that people sign without understanding the terms. The media took it in the least charitable way, then used it as justification for medical intervention. "They medicated me for having that opinion."

The South Carolina rally — where he broke down crying — was about something different. He won't say it directly, but he circles it: a potential decision about his daughter North, before she was born. "I was crying about the possible chance that we didn't make the family we have today." It's the rawest beat in three hours of raw beats.

Race, History & The Program

STRUCTURAL · WHITE SUPREMACY

"That is America." His father was a Black Panther. Disney controls the narrative now.

Kanye doesn't hedge on the structural claim. Systemic white supremacy is real. "That is America. That is the world currently." His first superhero was Superman. His father was a Black Panther — but when Disney makes Black Panther, it's a character "designed by a white person, put out by a white company, controlling the narrative." When you search "Black Panther" now, you don't see his dad protecting the neighborhood. The real history is buried under the corporate version.

PROGRAMMING · HISTORICAL FRAMING

Black History Month: "Remember When I Cheated on You Month." Depleted and defeated.

Black History Month, in his framing, functions as programming. "Remember when I cheated on you month." It shows Black people getting hosed down — a monthly reminder that they were slaves. "How does that make you feel? Depleted and defeated." The longest moments of our lives are our memories and our imaginations. Now is gone in an instant. What Black History Month tells you about who you are stays with you. The question isn't whether history should be taught. The question is what the framing does to the person who receives it.

HISTORY · ANTI-SLAVERY BETRAYAL

The 3/5ths Compromise was made by the anti-slavery North. "The people on our side."

His most startling argument: the 3/5ths Compromise was created by the anti-slavery North — the people supposedly on Black people's side. "The people on our side thought of us as three-fifths of a man." The compromise mentality — "come work for us, but you're three-fifths" — is still embedded in the electoral college, gerrymandering, the entire political architecture. The structure of betrayal was built by allies. That makes it harder to name and harder to dismantle.

WEALTH · CATEGORIZATION

"Why do I have to say 'second wealthiest Black man'? We shouldn't need a special box."

"I'm the second wealthiest Black man in America," he notes. "Why do I have to say that? We shouldn't have to have a special box, a special month." The racial qualifier in wealth rankings is itself an indictment — a separate category that implies a separate standard. He is not making a point about his own status. He is making a point about the architecture of categorization that survives even when the underlying inequality is supposedly addressed.

INTERNALIZED FEAR · PROGRAMMING

The most gangster gangsters he knows won't go downtown. Afraid of white people.

The deepest cut: the most gangster gangsters he knows won't go downtown. They're afraid of white people. "That's just programming. But that program is inside the curriculum, inside the media." Fear that was installed through history and reinforced through every institutional channel — curriculum, news, entertainment — now runs automatically. The program doesn't need enforcers anymore. It runs inside the people it was designed to control. That, in his framing, is the real architecture of power.

Fear vs. Love

Joe steers the conversation to its most serious register: the military. If you're president, you're commander-in-chief. What if China invades Taiwan? What if Iran escalates? What if Russia crosses a line — and you have to make decisions about sending people into war?

Kanye pauses. Prays. The room goes still.

I would have the greatest professionals on the planet — the most skilled people with all the experience — present the information, and I would make the most sound, rational decisions, and I would follow God's will.

— Kanye West, after praying on air

His answer is the most measured, humble, and grounded thing he's said in three hours. He's a civilian admitting he's a civilian. The prayer was genuine: he was asking for help. But beneath the answer is the architecture of his entire worldview, distilled to its simplest form: everything is either fear or love. Fear is the disease. Love is the cure. "If you instill the fear of God, you eliminate the fear of anything else."

Joe, closing the episode, sounds genuinely affected: "You said all this in the most non-politician way I've ever heard anybody describe these things. I know you really mean it." He jokes that people will blame him if Kanye becomes president — because he "made him seem like a rational choice."

The episode ends with a write-in ballot tutorial. Kanye West, weeks from an election he will not win, having spent three hours laying out a vision that no political consultant would sign off on, smiling. "This won't be the last time."

He's not wrong. By November 2024, he'd return to this show. By February 2025, again. And in every appearance, the same current runs through: a man who believes the world can be remade, and that he's the one holding the blueprint. If a visionary deconstructionist actually ran the system they'd spent a lifetime dismantling — what would break? And what might finally start to work?
