Neil deGrasse Tyson on Art, Physics & Why We Deny Science
Neil deGrasse Tyson:
Two hours and 18 minutes that opened with a forensic analysis of Van Gogh's Starry Night. NDT ranges through science denial, the triple point of water, terraforming Mars, why wireless electricity doesn't work the way Tesla fans think, and the physics of how we're all connected — through the same water molecules that passed through Napoleon and Jesus.
"The Background Is the Universe"
NDT shows up in a vest covered in Van Gogh's Starry Night. Rogan asks why. NDT launches into a full forensic astronomy lecture — the crescent moon orientation proves it's early morning, the bright spot on the horizon is Venus, and the specific configuration lets astronomers date exactly when Van Gogh painted it. "It's not what Van Gogh saw that night. It's what he felt."
Then he pivots: "This could have been called The Cypress Tree, Sleepy Village, or Rolling Hills. But no — it's called Starry Night. Everything in front of it is just in the way. The background is the universe." For NDT, this painting is a pivot point in art history — a moment where the cosmos became the subject. And the swirling sky? "If you ever saw a sky that looked like that, the end would be here."
He ties it to poetry — why we know Paul Revere (a poem), why Joyce Kilmer's "Trees" matters (art elevating the mundane). "Art forces you to pause and reflect on things you took for granted. They get beatified by the talents of artists."
The Cherry-Picking of Science
"It Conflicts with What I Want to Be True"
When the first black hole photo was published, NDT tweeted: "Scientists report first photo of a black hole. Public: amazing! Scientists report humans are warming the Earth. Public: that conflicts with what I want to be true, so it must be false." It was the same scientists, same methods, same peer review — but one result got celebrated, the other rejected. "That is the cherry-picking of science."
Science Denial Lives Across the Spectrum
NDT refuses to let this be a one-sided critique. "You find liberal folk complaining that conservatives deny climate science, while those same people are rubbing crystals together to be healed, or denying vaccines. All of this requires some total rejection of mainstream science." Driving a GPS-enabled car while tweeting about the climate hoax isn't just conservative — it's human.
Science Denial Has Real-World Costs
"People can think what they want. But if thinking what they want influences policy, which then affects everybody — then your science denial has consequences. Economic health, physical health, security." NDT doesn't argue for thought control. He argues that denial isn't victimless. "It won't stop civilization, but it can certainly slow it down."
The Freakiness of Water
The Property That Makes Life Possible
Water is one of the only substances where the solid form is less dense than the liquid. Ice floats. This means it forms an insulating layer on lakes, letting fish survive winter. "If the opposite were true, there would likely be no life on land or anywhere on Earth." Religious thinkers cite this as proof of design. NDT just notes: it's a very special ingredient.
Ice, Water, and Steam — All at Once
NDT describes the triple point — a specific temperature and pressure where water exists as ice, liquid, and steam simultaneously. Mars's atmospheric pressure is so close to water's triple point that in certain regions, you could have ice cubes, liquid water, and steam coming off the pot at once. "The universe is far freakier than what our five senses are exposed to on Earth."
You Can Melt Ice by Squeezing It
"Pull out an ice cube at near 0°F. Leave it on the counter for 10 minutes. Before it melts, squeeze it — you can force it to melt by squeezing." Because you're forcing it into a smaller volume than the ice structure occupies, and the only way to accomplish that is if it becomes liquid. Ice's unusual property of expanding when frozen makes this possible.
Terraforming Mars and the Sacred Mountaintops
Don't Take the Mars Nuke Literally
Rogan asks about Elon's idea to nuke Mars's poles. NDT reframes it: the real principle is that you want to warm Mars AND block ultraviolet radiation. Without an ozone layer, UV is "highly hostile to organic molecules." You'd need to heat the planet, build atmospheric protection, and wait. "It's a general principle of what you want to accomplish, not a literal plan."
Mountaintops Are Sacred to Scientists Too
NDT's PhD data came from mountaintop telescopes in Chile. When indigenous groups protest telescopes on sacred peaks, NDT's response is nuanced: "What we learn from those mountaintops gives us a deeper understanding of who and what we are. Whatever your concept of God, the discoveries of astrophysicists bring you closer to it." Then let them vote. Democracy + information.
"That Water Has Passed Through the Kidneys of Abraham Lincoln"
NDT picks up a bottle of water. "There are more molecules of water in this bottle than there are bottles of water this volume in all the world's oceans." Drink it, pee it out, and the molecules scatter into the global water cycle. "Given enough time, you scoop a cup of water out of anywhere — that is water that has passed through the kidneys of Abraham Lincoln, Genghis Khan, Joan of Arc, Socrates, Plato, Jesus."
Rogan: "Can I get a bottle of Jesus?" NDT: "You just ruined it." But the point stands. The same is true for air — every breath you take contains molecules that went through the lungs of everyone who ever lived. "We're all connected, and there's no way around it."
Rogan:"我能来一瓶耶稣水吗?"NDT:"你把一切都毁了。"
Then he pivots to glacier melt physics — freshwater pouring into salt oceans creates density layers that disrupt vertical circulation. "There are fish that can't live if the ocean circulation changes." The poetic awe and the hard physics live side by side. That's the NDT signature.
Tesla, Electricity & the Surveillance State
Why Wireless Electricity Can't Work
NDT addresses the Tesla fandom: "Don't come crying to me saying he wasn't recognized — there's a unit of electromagnetism named after him." Tesla's wireless electricity idea "almost certainly would not have worked." Visible light photons carry too little energy to drive a motor. Radio waves are even lower energy. What they CAN do is transmit information — and that became the modern era.
Regulation Is What Keeps You Alive
"If you have something good and it gets abused, you regulate it. That's the whole point. Airlines are regulated so you don't die. We have the safest aviation record now." The same logic applies to tech, privacy, food, drugs. "There are nefarious people who, in control of powerful forces on society, would gain at the expense of everyone else. So you regulate."
The Frog in the Boiling Water
NDT reflects on passive listening devices. "You get ads for things you talked about. People say it's just keywords, no big deal. That's the frog in the boiling water." We accepted security cameras in banks, then streets, then parks. We handed over privacy to social media companies voluntarily — something 1984 never anticipated. "The guards became the gatekeepers of your privacy."
"The universe is far freakier than what our five senses are exposed to on Earth."
