Leah Remini: Scientology, the Aftermath, and Breaking Free
She spent 30 years inside the Church of Scientology. Then she asked a question about a missing woman — and they told her she didn't have the rank.
Born Into It
You're nine years old. A man your mother just met tells you that you're not a child — you're a spiritual being in a little body. You picked your mother for this. You found your way back. You're a big being.
Age Nine, No Return
Leah entered Scientology at nine and left school in eighth grade. She was roughly thirteen. Instead of high school, she worked — selling car insurance for Scientology-affiliated companies. The church doesn't value traditional education. It values your education. By the time you're old enough to question what you've learned, you've never learned anything else.
Self-Brainwashing by Design
Members study policies every day — looking up words, writing essays, doing clay demonstrations, getting tested on what they read. As Leah put it: "You actually brainwash yourself." The system is designed so that you speak the same language, work toward the same goal, and believe you're the only ones saving the planet. The everydayness is the mechanism.
The Minimum
Two and a half hours per day. That's the minimum course time. On a workday, you go after filming. On a tape day, you make it up on weekends. On vacation, you make it up when you get back. There's no day off. Leah did this for over thirty years — every single day, a mandatory session of study, auditing, or both.
The Everyday Machine
If this control system is still running — and it is — here's who it's running on.
Knowledge Reports
If you see a fellow Scientologist do something against policy — have a drink, make a joke about L. Ron Hubbard, skip a session — you are required to write a report. If you don't, and they confess the next day, you get written up for knowing and not reporting. The system creates mutual surveillance as a default state.
The 24-Hour Rule
No alcohol 24 hours before a service. Since services are daily, that means effectively no alcohol ever. If you drink on vacation, you confess it at your next session. The e-meter registers that something happened. You talk. They write it down. Everyone who was there gets written up too.
"What Are Your Crimes?"
When Leah was sent to Florida for interrogation, the question wasn't "What happened?" It was "What are your crimes? What are your evil intentions towards Tom Cruise? Towards David Miscavige?" The framing assumes guilt. Three months of daily sessions designed to break resistance until you retract everything you said.
Disconnection
When someone is declared a Suppressive Person, you cannot speak to them. Your child. Your parent. Your spouse. The policy is written in church doctrine. If you talk to a declared SP, you become one too. Leah's own goddaughter — who Leah delivered in the hospital — cannot speak to her.
Celebrity Kingdom
Different Rules
Leah was taught that every Scientologist is equal — spiritual beings working toward the same goal. Then she saw Tom Cruise jump on Oprah's couch, receive an executive role in the church, and get treatment no average member ever gets. She wrote internal reports calling him out for behavior that would get any other member disciplined. The church's response: they sent her to Florida for three months of interrogation.
Khakhan
John Travolta was given a designation called Khakhan. Leah described the policy: "You can kill another human being. You're going to look the other way." She wanted people to look it up themselves: "I don't want you to believe me. I want you to look it up." The Ethics Protection and Responsibility of Leaders policies both state that those around a leader handle problems so the leader never knows.
Staff as Servants
Tom Cruise's staff are all Scientologists. There's policy on how to talk to him: no backtalk, no opinions, no sighing, no gestures out of line. Step out, and you're dealt with by the church. Celebrities don't leave because the amount of power they receive from the church is "like nothing in Hollywood."
The Cost of Celebrity
Celebrities are insulated from average member experiences. They don't do manual labor. They don't get interrogated for asking questions. Their every need is handled by staff who believe they're serving the person saving the planet. The system works because it works for the people at the top — and they're the ones the public sees.
The Unraveling
At Tom Cruise's wedding in Italy, Leah asked a simple question: "Where is Shelly?" David Miscavige's wife — his constant companion, at his side 24 hours a day — wasn't there. When Leah asked, people scattered. Then she was told: "You don't have the f***ing rank to ask about a human being."
The Report That Started It
Leah wrote reports on senior executives at the wedding, wired them back from her hotel room in Italy, calling friends to write reports verbatim and get them to the Watchdog Committee. She thought she was saving the church. She was making herself a target.
90 Days in Florida
The church flew Leah to Clearwater, Florida — the "mecca" of Scientology. For three months, she sat in a locked room with an e-meter, facing a person armed with a stack of reports written on her by everyone who worked for Tom Cruise. She was asked about her evil intentions. This was during her hiatus from King of Queens. Her family was there. She didn't tell them what was happening.
The Retraction
After 90 days, Leah retracted everything. "I made it all up. I didn't see any of it." When she returned to LA, the church told her everything done to her in Florida was wrong — but that if she didn't let it go, that proved she was guilty of the crimes she'd been accused of.
Cost of Leaving
Leah didn't lose one person when she left. She lost everyone.
Everyone You Know
Your friends are Scientologists. Your family are Scientologists. Your business contacts are Scientologists. When you leave, all of them are instructed to disconnect from you. Not some — all. Leah lost friends she'd had for decades. People she'd known since childhood. Her goddaughter. People who came to her wedding. People who held her when she cried. Gone.
$1 Million Gone
Leah estimates she gave over a million dollars to the church over three decades. Courses, auditing, donations, special projects. The church's model is pay-as-you-go: each level costs more than the last, and you can't skip ahead. Most members never reach the upper levels because they can't afford it. But the church has a solution — they give you a job working for them.
$15 a Week
Sea Org members sign a billion-year contract. They work 80+ hours per week and get paid $15–50 per week. Leah described children in the Sea Org doing hard manual labor — building compounds, serving food, cleaning. When she says "most Scientologists don't even get to the upper levels," this is who she's talking about: the labor force that keeps the machine running.
Behind the Curtain
The Invitation Economy
You don't just sign up for OT levels. You have to be invited. You have to have already spent enormous sums of money. You have to have demonstrated loyalty over years. Most Scientologists never get there. And when you do reach a level, there's a new twist: the church tells you they messed it up. You have to redo that level — at your own expense. Leah described it as "the new scam." You pay to ascend, and they move the finish line.
Xenu and the Volcanoes
The story you've heard is real. 75 million years ago, an alien named Xenu brought billions of beings to Earth, stacked them around volcanoes, and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls attached to humans today, causing all our problems. This isn't a rumor — it's written doctrine. You just don't get to hear it until you've paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and reached OT III. Joe Rogan's reaction: "That movie was awesome." He was talking about Battlefield Earth.
The Reactive Mind
The pitch: you have a reactive mind beneath your conscious awareness that makes you make bad decisions. Scientology will help you find those areas and stop making bad decisions. Who doesn't want that? It starts small and reasonable. By the time you're deep enough to hear about Xenu, you've already invested years and hundreds of thousands of dollars. You can't afford to believe it's nonsense.
Filing Reports on Yourself
Leah wouldn't go to dinner in her 30s and have wine. If she did, she'd get reports written on her. They had church the next day. She was never really present with friends — she was thinking they were lost, they needed Scientology. "I was never really part of" normal life, she said. The internal reporting system means you're surveilling yourself even when nobody's watching.
After the Fall
Leah described her life after leaving as "living for the first time." But she also found something unexpected: faith. Not in Scientology. Not in any single thing. "I have faith for the first time," she said. "I don't believe in any one thing. I believe in people." She credited the process — real therapy, real reflection, real human connection — as the thing that actually works. The church sells a version of that. The real thing is free.
"If we weren't telling the truth, you would have sued us."
— Leah Remini, on why the church hasn't sued her show
Why She Made It
Leah didn't make the A&E show for fame or money. She made it because people were being hurt. She described seeing parents who hadn't spoken to their children in years, families destroyed by disconnection, people who'd given everything they had. "If you're going to bully somebody, bully me. Bully A&E," she said. "But I'm going to let these people tell their stories because they're telling the truth."
What Needs to Happen
Leah's ask is specific and small: revoke the church's tax-exempt status. That's it. Not "destroy Scientology." Not "ban religion." Just stop subsidizing an organization that splits families, pays workers below minimum wage, and operates a parallel justice system. The IRS already granted them exemption once under pressure. It can revoke it.
Living for the First Time
Three decades of control don't vanish overnight. Leah described going to dinner with friends and being present for the first time — not thinking about who needed saving, not calculating her next course, not filing mental reports. "I'm like living for the first time," she said. Not recovered. Recovering. Still losing people. Still being followed. Still being called a liar by an organization with more resources than she'll ever have. But living anyway.
