Bernie Sanders on Healthcare, Inequality & Beating the Oligarchy

August 2019. Bernie Sanders walked into Joe Rogan's studio and delivered the clearest, most unfiltered version of his platform in just over an hour. No 45-second debate clock. No sound bites. Just a case for why the system is broken — and who's keeping it that way.

"You Shouldn't Even Call Them Debates"

Rogan opens by asking about the Democratic primary debates. Sanders doesn't hesitate. "You shouldn't even call them a debate. What they are is a reality TV show. You have to come up with a sound bite. It is demeaning — demeaning to the candidates and demeaning to the American people. You can't explain the complexity of health care in America in 45 seconds. Nobody can."

He describes the absurdity: Tulsi Gabbard attacks Kamala Harris for her record as prosecutor. Harris gets 12 seconds to respond. "These are long conversations — about whether people were jailed for marijuana, about whether evidence was withheld. And they give her 12 seconds." The format, he argues, is designed to prevent serious discussion. "If I yelled and screamed, if I took my clothes off, I'd get a lot of publicity. A thoughtful answer to a complicated question? Not so sexy for the media."

Healthcare as a Human Right

THE GAP 差距

The Only Major Country Without Universal Care

"We are the only major country on earth not to guarantee health care to all people as a human right. And yet we end up spending almost twice as much per capita." Sanders lives 50 miles from Canada. "You have major heart surgery. You're in the hospital for a month. You know what the bill is? Zero. You go to any doctor you want. You don't take out your wallet."

THE FUNCTION

The System Is Working Exactly As Intended

"The function of the current health care system is not to provide quality care to all. It is to make tens of billions of dollars in profit for the drug companies and the insurance companies. That's the function." Half a million Americans go bankrupt every year from medical bills. The system isn't failing. It's optimizing for the wrong outcome.

THE FIX

Medicare for All — A Four-Year Phase-In

Sanders' plan is simple: expand Medicare. Drop the eligibility age from 65 to 55, then 45, then 35, then everybody — over four years. Add dental, hearing aids, and eyeglasses. "That's about it. Not terribly radical." He notes that the top 10 drug companies made $69 billion in profit the prior year — while people rationed insulin.

"An Economy That's Working for a Very Few"

Three People Own More Than the Bottom Half

"Three people own more wealth than the bottom half of American society — 160 million people." The top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 92%. Over the last 30 years, the bottom half saw their wealth decline by $900. "You've got people working two or three jobs, wondering how they're going to feed their kids. And meanwhile, billionaires are getting huge tax breaks."

The World's Richest Man and His Workers on Food Stamps

Sanders brings up Amazon specifically: "The guy who owns Amazon is the wealthiest guy in the world. And yet thousands of his workers are paid wages so low they require food stamps and Medicaid." The math doesn't add up — unless you understand who writes the rules. Amazon spent millions fighting a $15 minimum wage. "Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos is worth $150 billion."

The Drug Companies Spent $4.7 Billion on Lobbying

"The drug companies and the health care industry spent $4.7 billion on lobbying and campaign contributions over the last 20 years." That's how they keep the system intact. When California proposed negotiating drug prices, the industry alone spent enough to defeat it. "Why is it legal for lobbyists to exist in the form they do?" Sanders asks. The answer: because the people they lobby wrote the rules.

"President Bernie, What Do You Do?"

Rogan asks the question directly: "President Bernie, what do you do? You get in there." Sanders lays out his agenda in a single, uninterrupted paragraph — the kind he never gets to deliver in a debate:

  • Medicare for All — guarantee health care as a human right.
  • $15 minimum wage — "a living wage, not a starvation wage."
  • Free public college and trade school — cancel student debt by taxing Wall Street speculation.
  • Criminal justice reform — end mass incarceration, legalize marijuana, expunge records.
  • Green New Deal — transform the energy system within 12 years.
  • Campaign finance reform — overturn Citizens United, get money out of politics.

He frames each policy not as ideology, but as a response to data. "Every psychologist will tell you ages zero through four are the most important years for intellectual and emotional development. And yet our early childhood system is totally dysfunctional. Child care workers earn starvation wages, and working-class families can't find affordable care."

Climate Change: Less Than 12 Years

"Trump Is Dead Wrong — Climate Change Is Not a Hoax"

Sanders opens plainly: "I believe in science, and I do." Scientists are telling us, he says, "that we have fewer than 12 years to transform our energy system or else there will be irreparable damage to our country and the world." The timeline isn't his invention — it's the IPCC's. And the president of the United States, at that moment, was calling it a hoax.

"Short-Term Profits Are Not More Important Than the Planet"

"We have to tell the fossil fuel industry that their short-term profits are not more important than the future of this planet. You cannot keep producing a product which is destroying the planet." Rogan presses: "How do you tell them they can't sell it anymore?" Sanders: "There are ways to create new jobs, to retrain workers. But we have to move — consciously — away from fossil fuels."

The Politics of the 1%

CITIZENS UNITED

"If You Think Billionaires Should Control Government, Fine"

"If you think it's OK that billionaires can buy elections — that's a disagreement we have. I think democracy means one person, one vote. Not one billionaire, one thousand votes." Sanders argues the Citizens United ruling legalized bribery. The core premise of his campaign: you can't fix anything else until you fix the way money buys power.

STUDENT DEBT

"And What Was Their Crime?"

Sanders describes a man in Nevada in his 50s, still paying off student debt. "He fears they'll garnish his Social Security checks. What was his crime? He tried to get a higher education." Unlike most debts, student loans survive bankruptcy. "People can't get married, can't buy a home, can't buy a car. They are crushed. By a system that was supposed to lift them up."

THE WORK 具体工作

"An Administration Filled with Workers, Not Billionaires"

"My administration is not going to be filled with billionaires. It is going to be filled with the best people from the working class itself — from the trade union movement — who will create policies that work for workers, not just the billionaire class." It's his closing promise: the personnel IS the policy. Who you put in the room determines what the room produces.

"If you think it's OK that billionaires can buy elections, that's a disagreement we have. I think democracy means one person, one vote."
