Bret Weinstein on Evergreen, Lab Leaks & the Collision Course
Bret Weinstein:
June 2020. Bret Weinstein — evolutionary biologist, Evergreen whistleblower — told Joe Rogan that campus authoritarianism had spilled into the real world. Then he walked through the case for the COVID lab leak, why the lockdown was botched, and what happens when you can't put the genie back in the bottle.
"Evergreen Has Spilled Over Into the World"
Rogan opens by saying Weinstein sounded the alarm that "nobody wanted to hear." At Evergreen State College in 2017, Weinstein was driven off campus by a mob after refusing to participate in a mandatory "Day of Absence" — where white people were asked to leave campus. He was pilloried as a reactionary. Mocked for "making too much of college kids going wild."
Three years later, in June 2020, the same dynamics were playing out on America's streets. CHAZ/CHOP in Seattle. Defund-the-police occupations. Weinstein wasn't gloating. He was terrified. "The people who mocked me — some have started to call and say, 'I got it wrong. What do we do now?' And I appreciate those calls. But I'm not optimistic. The people catching up don't realize this is unstoppable."
西雅图的 CHAZ/CHOP 自治区。
Science Under Siege
"You're a Race Traitor for Studying Science"
Weinstein's student Odette was surrounded by a mob of Evergreen activists who called her a "race traitor" — for studying evolutionary biology. With Weinstein and his wife Heather. "They said science is racist. Trying to parse it as if it has logical content is a mistake. It's tactical. If she had caved, they'd have a powerful ally saying, 'Yes, in fact science is racist.'"
"Any Success Differential — Racism Is the Answer"
Weinstein introduces "racism of the gaps" — every disparity gets explained by racism. "If we see an absence of Black people in math, the answer is racism. Do they apply it where Black people excel? No. It's self-serving." Like hip hop — nobody's demanding proportional representation among country music stars. The double standard reveals the ideology isn't about fairness.
Shutting Down STEM to Prove Power
"They got the most important scientific institutions to broadcast a demand to shut down STEM. That's an amazing level of power." The shutdown stem movement — calling for a pause in science to address systemic racism — wasn't about reform. Weinstein frames it as a power play. "They were proving what they could do."
The Police and the Mob
"Withdraw the Police and Chaos Takes Hours"
"The single most important lesson from Evergreen: the police can be withdrawn from a situation and chaos takes a matter of hours to emerge. We are also seeing this in Seattle." Weinstein supports police reform — a "total rethink" even — but draws a hard line at abolition without replacement. "The idea that you could withdraw the police first is absolutely insane."
"Why Were Police Even Called for That?"
Weinstein and Rogan discuss Rayshard Brooks — drunk, compliant, polite, asking for an Uber, killed after a tussle. "He was not a bad person. Police should be there for robbers, murderers, rapists. Why not have a program — park your car, call you an Uber, write a ticket, work it out in court." The reform case isn't about abolition. It's about matching response to threat.
The Lab Leak Case
From "Bats at the Wet Market" to Lab Leak
Weinstein was in the Amazon with no connectivity when COVID emerged. His first take: standard zoonotic origin — bats, seafood market, bushmeat trade. "I tweeted that. Then people tweeted back: 'So you think it's a coincidence there's a biosafety level 4 lab in Wuhan where this started?' I thought — that's a heck of a coincidence. I retracted the tweet. I went down the rabbit hole."
The Missing Phase in Viral Evolution
"When a virus jumps species, it's typically very poor at its job. No evolutionary experience with that host. There's no evidence this virus went through that phase — it showed up in Wuhan and spread immediately. It was already well-adapted to our cells and to transmit between individuals. That is conspicuous." The virus arrived pre-evolved for human pandemic efficiency.
The Furin Cleavage Site Problem
"The addition of a furin cleavage site makes a coronavirus much more transmissible in human tissue. It is established in the literature. If you were going to study pandemic potential — you'd add a furin site. The risk: the enhanced virus escapes. And that's exactly what the lab leak hypothesis proposes."
The Lockdown That Wasn't
"We Went Halfway — And That Was the Mistake"
"We screwed up the lockdown badly because we went halfway. A very short, very intense lockdown could have ended it. Six weeks. Drive it to extinction. The political will wasn't there." He contrasts New Zealand — "with utter envy — imagine being free of SARS-CoV-2 at this moment. They nailed it. They proved it was possible."
Not as Lethal as Feared — But Scarier for Other Reasons
"I'm not concerned because it's as lethal as feared — it isn't. I'm afraid for other reasons. It's brand new to us evolutionarily. And the lockdown went wrong — we created the worst of both worlds: economic devastation without disease elimination." The cost of halfway is higher than either extreme.
"Many Scenarios End in Civil War"
"We are headed on a collision course with history. We're really staring at many scenarios that end in kind of civil war. I do think it's still possible to avert that outcome — but I don't know the name of the force that gets in its way. That's really troubling."
Weinstein isn't being hyperbolic. He's an evolutionary biologist who spent years studying complex adaptive systems. What he's describing is a cascade — campus authoritarianism normalizing mob rule, police legitimacy eroding, science institutions capitulating to ideological pressure, pandemic response driven by politics instead of biology. Each failure feeds the next.
"People don't understand — I'm not even sure I understand — but there's something deeply wrong with the architecture." When an evolutionary biologist can't identify the feedback loop that would reverse the trajectory, the system has reached a dangerous phase. His forecast wasn't doom saying. It was diagnosis.
"The people who mocked me for making too much of college kids going wild — some of them have started to call and say, 'I got it wrong. What do we do now?'"
