Xenonite seems like the perfect material — until Taumoeba evolves to eat through it, creating the book's final crisis.

The man who was forced onto this mission against his will — the reluctant hero who never wanted to sacrifice anything — chooses to turn back. He sacrifices his return home to save his friend.
