The course structure is elegant: study geopolitics in the present, use that analytical model to make predictions about the future, then test those predictions against reality. If the model works, take it backward to reveal the secret history of humanity — the history that powerful people implanted in your brain. The real question: how does power work?

Wealthy merchants opened banks to store gold. They gave depositors receipts — paper contracts promising gold on demand. Then they issued more receipts as loans. The gold stayed the same, but the paper doubled it. Five million in gold, ten million in receipts. Money was created from thin air through the simple act of writing a second contract.

The system had a fatal flaw: if too many people demanded their gold at once, the bank collapsed — a bank run. So banks formed cartels, usually through intermarriage, pooling resources across borders. When a king refused to repay, the cartel would fund his enemies. This network of banking alliances became what we now call central banking — and it controls the world today.

If banks can print unlimited money, why do people starve? The students keep answering "scarcity" — and the professor keeps demolishing it. The real answer: the powerful don't want everyone to have money, because then nobody would work. Poverty is manufactured misery. You only chase money because you've seen people suffer without it. Your parents said "work hard or end up poor" — but that threat only works if poor people exist.

When asked "what makes you happy?", the students list money, power, freedom, love, video games. All individual. But for most of human history, happiness was collective. If your community wasn't happy, you couldn't be happy. If you struck it rich, you didn't hoard it — you threw a massive feast for everyone. Your reputation came from generosity, not accumulation.

The idea that you're a person independent of family, community, and the world around you — it "makes no sense." The concept of the individual is brand new in human history. Before, there was no "I" separate from "us." The proof? The worst punishment wasn't death — it was exile. Being cut off from your community was worse than being killed. That's how little the individual mattered.

Throughout every society in human history, if you came into sudden wealth, the first thing you did was hold a big feast for everyone. Not save it. Not invest it. Not hide it underground for your children (that's modern thinking). You spent it all — because what mattered was your reputation, your generosity, your bond with the community. Happiness meant sharing.

在人类历史上的每一个社会，突然发了财的第一件事就是大办宴席。不是存起来，不是投资，不是埋地下留给孩子（那是现代人的思路）。全花掉——因为真正有价值的是你在社区中的名声、你的慷慨、你和众人的纽带。幸福的本意，就是分享。

In the ancient polytheistic worldview, powerful gods like Apollo, Dionysus, Fate, and Fortune controlled everything. Even the gods were controlled by older, deeper forces like Anger and Pride. You had zero individual agency. You might get rich, but then the god of pride would teach you a lesson. The gods were vengeful, petty, and random — just like real life.

The modern scientific worldview says we are synapses that generate memories. Our fate comes from DNA + environment. If you're angry, it's because of genes or experiences — and with proper therapy and reflection, you can control it. Individual control. Individual responsibility. This is what school, psychiatry, and modern society are built on.

The polytheistic worldview gave birth to eudaimonia — flourishing. If the gods could destroy you tomorrow, then live today to the fullest. Seize the day. Be the best you can be. The Greeks — Plato, Homer, Euripides — were "superior to us." Today we've replaced flourishing with pleasure. Instead of asking "how do I create?" we ask "how do I not feel sad?" One system inspires greatness; the other manufactures dependency.

多神论世界观催生了一个概念——"eudaimonia"，繁盛。既然诸神随时可能毁掉你，那就在今天活到极致。把握当下，做最好的自己。柏拉图、荷马、欧里庇得斯那些希腊人"比我们强太多"。而今天，我们把"繁盛"换成了"享乐"。不再问"我如何创造？"而是问"我怎么才能不难过？"一种制度激发伟大，另一种制造依赖。

Two paths: a 12-year-old spends 10 years as a hospital apprentice, learning from a mentor, starting by mopping floors. Another goes to Harvard, then Harvard Medical School. At age 30, who's the better doctor? "Obviously the first one — because the Harvard graduate never actually worked in a hospital." And here's the kicker: in the apprentice system, anyone can become a doctor. Intelligence isn't the gatekeeper — access is.

Only three societies in history introduced mandatory free public schooling: Sparta, the Aztecs, and Prussia. What do they have in common? All three were fundamentally war societies dedicated to defeating their neighbors. Sparta — the warrior state. The Aztecs — conquerors of Central America who practiced human sacrifice. Prussia — Europe's dominant military power for centuries. School was invented to prepare people for war.

If school was about learning, why don't parents and children go together? Because brainwashing only works when you're separated from the people who love you. A 5-year-old torn from their parents feels insecure, anxious, afraid. Who do they trust now? The teacher. And whatever the teacher says becomes truth. Your parents were brainwashed too — but a child with a parent present is secure enough to question authority.

Alchemy was the ancient pursuit of turning lead into gold — nothing into everything. Science tells you it was fake. But the professor says: we achieved alchemy. Power is the capacity to make you believe that money is valuable, that the individual leads to happiness, that the nation-state exists. We turn lead into gold every day. And yet — this was an accident. An accident of human imagination. Which means we can reimagine the system and create one that allows for eudaimonia — the flourishing of the human intellect.
