Ukraine, the Middle East, Southeast Asia — conflicts are proliferating across the globe. The US is threatening military intervention in Mexico and Venezuela. We live in a world where violence is becoming normalized, and each new conflict signals a deeper systemic decline.

Birth rates are plummeting worldwide. Young people don't want to marry or have children. Work motivation has collapsed — in China they call it bailan (let it rot), in America it's "quiet quitting." When a civilization's youth stops investing in the future, the future stops arriving.

Governments and families are drowning in debt. Housing prices have locked young people out of homeownership. People are more stressed, more pessimistic, and less willing to help a stranger on the street. Lower cohesion and trust — the invisible glue of civilization is dissolving.

政府和家庭都深陷债务。房价让年轻人望房兴叹。人们更焦虑、更悲观，在街上看到倒地的人也不太愿意伸手。凝聚力和信任——文明的隐形胶水——正在溶解。

Stage 1: Consumer capitalism — build factories, create goods, generate real wealth. Stage 2: Financial capitalism — invest in stock markets, generate money instead of wealth. Stage 3: Monopoly capitalism — a few companies control everything. We are living in stage 3.

The real economy grows at about 2%. The financial economy grows at 5%. If you have a million dollars, opening a restaurant earns you $20,000 a year — but the stock market earns you $50,000. So everyone puts money into markets, nobody opens restaurants, and the real economy hollows out.

Peter Turchin spent decades studying why societies fall — from the Roman Empire to the French Revolution. His conclusion: elite families produce too many children who all want positions of power. When there aren't enough thrones to go around, the elites fight each other, dragging society into collapse.

They weren't competing for food. They were competing for status. And status is a zero-sum game: I win, you lose.

The same is true of modern elite societies — today's Peking University and Tsinghua graduates all want to be the big boss. There are too many of them and nowhere else to go. The result: war or revolution.

In a village, you know where your food comes from. You trust your neighbors. Emotions and traditions hold people together. But as civilizations climb from village to megacity, everything becomes abstracted. Money replaces trust. Individualism replaces community. Nobody wants to work hard anymore — they want immigrants to work for them.

在村庄里，你知道粮食从哪来，你信任邻居，情感和传统把人凝聚在一起。但随着文明从村庄攀升到超级都市，一切都变得抽象了。金钱取代了信任，个人主义取代了集体，没人再想拼命干活——他们想让移民替自己干。

At its height, the civilization must die. Beijing, Shanghai, New York, Paris, London — all megacities. Their citizens are individualistic, self-absorbed, and childless. Even an alien invasion wouldn't unite them — certain factions would ally with the aliens to conquer everyone else. No external threat can save a dying civilization from itself.

文明在巅峰时刻必然走向死亡。北京、上海、纽约、巴黎、伦敦——都是超级都市。市民原子化、自我沉溺、不愿生育。就算外星人入侵，人类也不会团结——某些派系会和外星人结盟去征服其他人。没有任何外部威胁能拯救一个正在自我毁灭的文明。

At the core of every society are a small number of founding families — maybe 10, maybe 100, but never more. The Roman Empire was controlled by only about 200 families. These families exercise power through three pillars: finance (central banking), religion (today: science and technology), and intelligence (spies). Through this nexus, they control schools, military, government, media, culture, and even crime.

Think of society as a corporation. The elite families are the owners. The middle class (scholar-officials, the professional-managerial class) are the managers. The people are the workers who generate real wealth. The managers are rent-seekers — lawyers, bureaucrats, anyone who extracts value from a gatekeeper position. They live nice lives but don't really produce anything.

Rise: Democracy, openness, meritocracy. Leaders listen to criticism. Workers feel they have a voice. Decline: Bureaucracy and deception. The managers lie to the people to protect their own positions. Collapse: Authoritarianism and coercion. Rule by force. Those who speak out become enemies of the state. "Let's go to McDonald's" becomes "go there or I'll beat you up."

崛起期：民主、开放、唯才是举。领导者欢迎批评，工人觉得自己有话语权。衰退期：官僚主义和欺骗。经理们为保住自己的位子开始对人民撒谎。崩溃期：专制和暴力。拳头说了算。敢说真话的人成了国家的敌人。"去麦当劳"从投票决定变成了"不去就揍你"。

The Western world will become increasingly authoritarian. The US and Europe will see a collapse of democratic norms and personal freedoms. We're already watching it happen — military force being used to resolve domestic issues, dissent being criminalized.

西方世界将日益走向专制。美国和欧洲的民主规范与个人自由将瓦解。这已经在发生——动用军队解决国内问题，异见被定罪。

As people lose the right to speak up, they feel less invested in the system. They stop working hard. The economy hollows out. People don't believe in the system anymore — it enters terminal crisis.

当人们失去发声的权利，就不再对这个系统有归属感。他们不再努力工作，经济被掏空。人们不再相信这个体制——系统进入终末危机。

When the native population refuses to work, the government's solution is simple: replace them. "If the people don't want to work, screw them — let's bring in immigrants." This further erodes social cohesion and living standards.

当本国人不愿干活，政府的办法很简单：换一批人。"人民不想干？那就引进移民来干。"这进一步侵蚀社会凝聚力和生活水平。

The people won't sit back and take it. Society fractures into factions — elite groups pull in segments of the middle class and masses, forming opposing camps. The streets become battlegrounds.

人民不会坐以待毙。社会分裂为派系——精英集团拉拢中产和群众，形成对立阵营。街头沦为战场。

When civil conflict threatens the ruling class, the solution throughout history has been the same: send the angry people off to pointless wars overseas. "If we let them keep fighting at home, eventually they'll come after us." War or revolution — the rulers always choose war.

当内乱威胁到统治阶层，历史上的解决方案从来只有一个：把愤怒的人送去打毫无意义的海外战争。"再让他们闹下去，早晚要来找我们算账。"战争还是革命——统治者永远选战争。
