The Foreign Influence Crisis

The Young Turks founder Cenk Uygur sat down with former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan for three and a half hours and put one number on the table: $127 million in, billions in new arms sales out. The rest of the conversation is what that ratio means for everything else — your politicians, your news, the war in Iran that started ten weeks ago, and what's left of American sovereignty. SparkReads has fact-checked the load-bearing claims; corrections appear inline.

The Diagnosis: Politically Homeless

Both speakers open by saying neither party represents them. Uygur's opening pitch: "bipartisan unity," when it happens in Washington, is uniformly the kind of unity donors pay for.

01 · The Setup 01 · 开场

Shawn Ryan opened by quoting Joe Rogan: "politically homeless." He always thought he was a Republican. Turns out he isn't. Not a Democrat either. Just an American who wants the country fixed. Cenk picked up the thread. After 24 years on YouTube, he said, you learn to watch what bipartisan agreement actually buys.

Paid family leave has 84% public approval. It can't pass. The CHIPS Act passed. Oil-industry subsidies of roughly $35 billion a year keep passing. Uygur's framing: there's a cleavage between things voters disagree about (which both parties weaponize for division) and things voters agree about (which neither party will pass, because neither party's donors want it).

The new wedge in that pattern, he argues, isn't a corporation. It's a foreign government.

"We don't even control our own government. If we don't control our own government, those other conversations are fake anyway."

The Mechanism: How Legalized Bribery Actually Works

Uygur walks the cascade — donor money, politician compliance, media coverage, "antisemite" deflection of critics, character-assassination of survivors. Each step closes the loop.

02 · The Frame 02 · 角度

The argument isn't that Israel is uniquely evil. Uygur is careful here.

"Israel is not uniquely evil. Israel is uniquely strategic."

If any country could buy 20 US Congresspeople for the price of a mid-cap PAC, every country would. The mechanics of how AIPAC and its super-PAC arm operate are the lesson — not the morality of any one country.

03 · Donor money attaches to votes 03 ·

In the 2024 cycle, AIPAC's combined PAC and super-PAC arm (United Democracy Project) spent $126.9 million — verified in FEC filings compiled by Sludge News and OpenSecrets. That made AIPAC-affiliated giving the largest single political-donor cluster of the cycle, ahead of the pharmaceutical industry's combined PAC spend.

Sludge's January 2025 tally shows AIPAC-affiliated PACs contributed to roughly 65% of the 119th Congress — backing 361 candidates in 2024, of whom 318 won. Uygur quoted "94%" on the show; the actual share is two-thirds, which is still extraordinary by donor-class standards.

Cumulative spending against single Democratic incumbents who broke from the AIPAC line is the more concentrated story:

  • Jamal Bowman (NY-16, 2024 primary): UDP spent $14.5 million in direct ads against him; total AIPAC-aligned outside spending in the race reached ~$25 million — a record for a US House race.
  • Cori Bush (MO-1, 2024 primary): AIPAC-aligned spending in the millions, primary lost.
  • Andy Levin (MI-11, 2022 primary): UDP spent $4 million in the race that ended his career, mostly on pro-Stevens advertising.

When asked whether $5 million might influence a politician's position, Uygur was incredulous: "Of course it does. What are you, kidding? You think regular people aren't influenced by $5 million?"

Any criticism of Israeli government policy gets reframed as antisemitism. Uygur's analogy is comic and load-bearing: imagine your wife catches you cheating, and you yell "trope! Mediterranean men are stereotyped as promiscuous!" Doesn't matter whether you actually slept with someone. The deflection is the point.

He extends the move: "the Jews control Congress" is a real antisemitic trope, with a real history. But, Uygur asks, when AIPAC publicly publishes its endorsement and contribution data — when independent FEC analyses confirm AIPAC-aligned giving is the largest donor cluster — is naming that fact a trope? Or is it a description? "Big pharma never thought to call it a trope," he notes. "Only Israel did."

05 · Character assassination 05 ·

Uygur cites his own experience. When he founded Justice Democrats — the group that helped elect AOC, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush — opposition research went looking for sex (nothing), workplace issues (nothing — Uygur claims they called every woman who'd ever worked at TYT), and finally surfaced 1990s blog posts he'd written and deleted 15 years prior. Once a public figure becomes a threat, Uygur argues, the file gets opened.

The pattern, he says, is institutional. Canary Mission and StopAntisemitism.com publicly target critics — and not just political ones. Uygur cites the case of his TYT co-host Ana Kasparian's husband, a high-school baseball coach with no political profile, who was pressured to publicly denounce his wife or be fired.

Madison Cawthorn — a Republican congressman from North Carolina — made an offhand comment in March 2022 about cocaine orgies among older Republicans in DC. Within weeks a series of damaging photos and tapes leaked: shirtless wrestling with a staffer, footage in lingerie. He lost his next primary by single digits. Uygur's claim: this is the file system, kept ready, opened on cue.

06 · The "seven snakes" vote 06 · "七条蛇"那一票

On April 16, 2026, the Senate voted on Bernie Sanders' resolution to block US sales of armored bulldozers to Israel — the equipment being used to demolish housing in 53% of Gaza and three Christian villages in southern Lebanon. The resolution failed 40–59. Seven Democrats voted with all 53 Republicans:

Blumenthal (CT) · Coons (DE) · Cortez Masto (NV) · Fetterman (PA) · Gillibrand (NY) · Rosen (NV) · Schumer (NY)

Uygur calls them the "seven snakes." The Republicans, he says, can argue they represent their voters — older Republican voters still support Israel. But Quinnipiac's August 2025 poll shows 75% of Democratic voters oppose more military aid to Israel, and 60% of all American voters oppose it. The seven Democratic senators voted against three-quarters of their own party's voters. That, he says, is the mechanism in action.

"Once you allow the bribery, it is an absolute certainty that all your politicians will get bribed."

The Iran Cascade: Why the Petrodollar Is the Next Domino

Uygur's economic argument: the Iran war puts the US dollar's reserve-currency status at risk — and that loss, not the war itself, is what ends the American century.

07 · Where we are right now 07 · 当下的处境

The US-Iran war began February 28, 2026 with US strikes coordinated with Israeli air operations. As of early May 2026, ~2,500 Marines aboard USS Tripoli, elements of the 82nd Airborne, and ~6,000 troops on the USS George H.W. Bush carrier group are deployed to the Persian Gulf. Pentagon planning, leaked to the Washington Post in late March, includes "weeks of US ground operations." Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz since the war's first day; on April 18 the IRGC formally re-confirmed closure in response to a US naval blockade of Iranian ports. Strait traffic is at roughly 5% of pre-conflict levels.

This is the war Uygur argues was not in American interest. He places it firmly as Israeli policy, fought with American troops, missiles, and economic exposure.

08 · The mechanism 08 · 机制

Roughly 20 million barrels of crude oil per day moved through Hormuz before the closure — about 25% of seaborne oil trade and 20% of total petroleum-liquids consumption (EIA, 2024 data). When the strait closes, oil prices don't move linearly. Past $100 a barrel, panic sets in. Past $120, the global economy starts to crack. Past $150, it's recession. Past $200 — and Wall Street analysts are quietly modeling that scenario — the global economy crashes the way 2008 crashed.

That's the first-order problem. The deeper problem is what happens to the dollar.

Since 1971, every nation on Earth has had to hold US dollars to buy oil — because oil is priced and sold exclusively in dollars. Those dollar surpluses get recycled into US Treasury bonds, which is why the United States can borrow at lower rates than any other country. That low-cost borrowing privilege is what funds the US military, the social safety net, and tax rates lower than the spending they support. Lose dollar-denominated oil and the United States loses cheap borrowing. Cheap borrowing is the foundation of the post-1971 American economy.

"If the world stops pricing oil in dollars, we don't lose a war. We lose the privilege that funds every other thing we do."

— Cenk Uygur, paraphrased [57:00]

— Cenk Uygur

Uygur's claim about motive: Israel just opened the offshore Leviathan natural-gas field. With Hormuz closed and Iranian oil destroyed, Israel positions itself as Europe's energy backstop. The strategic logic, in his framing, is that breaking Hormuz makes Israel indispensable.

09 · "But why is the US the side collapsing?" 09 · "为什么倒下的是美国?"

But hold on — if Iran's economy is the one being bombed, why is the United States the side facing economic collapse? Because oil is a global market. When Hormuz closes, the price spike hits American consumers and American companies the same as it hits Beijing's. And because the United States is the side that started a war it had no domestic interest in, the United States is the side losing diplomatic capital while paying the economic cost. Uygur's word: proxy.

Jonathan Pollard — convicted of espionage for Israel in 1987 — was paroled by Obama in 2015 and allowed to leave the United States during the Trump administration. On December 30, 2020, Pollard arrived in Israel aboard a Boeing 737 owned by Sheldon Adelson's Las Vegas Sands group, greeted by Netanyahu on the tarmac (NPR, CBS, JTA, Times of Israel). The Adelson family contributed an estimated $220 million directly to Trump-aligned super-PACs across 2016, 2020, and 2024 — and several hundred million more to broader Trump-coalition Republican vehicles. On arrival, Pollard called on American Jews to "betray America and work for Israel."

Tom Alexander — a senior Israeli cybersecurity official — was caught in a 2025 US sex-trafficking sting in Las Vegas, alongside eight American co-defendants. The eight Americans face prosecution. Robert Maxwell — Ghislaine Maxwell's father, British media mogul — acquired the US textbook publisher Macmillan Inc. in 1988 for $2.6 billion. He was widely alleged to be a Mossad asset; the central source is Seymour Hersh's 1991 The Samson Option, which Maxwell sued for libel before his November 1991 death. Former Mossad officers (Ari Ben-Menashe, Victor Ostrovsky) and Israeli journalists later said Maxwell did cooperate with Mossad; he was buried on the Mount of Olives with Israeli officials present. The "Mossad agent" framing remains contested; "Mossad asset / collaborator" is the more defensible characterization.

The reporting documents Larry Ellison — Oracle founder, recent acquirer of TikTok, CBS, and CNN — coordinating with then-Israeli UN Ambassador Ron Prosor in 2015 to vet Marco Rubio's pro-Israel stance. After Ellison reported back that Rubio would be a reliable ally, Ellison plowed $5 million into the pro-Rubio Conservative Solutions super-PAC for the 2016 Republican primary.

14 · The Adelson dinner 14 ·

Days into the Iran war, JD Vance dined with the donor cluster

Days after the Iran war started in March 2026, Vice President JD Vance reportedly had dinner with Miriam Adelson, Paul Singer, and Ronald Lauder — the same donor cluster, the same network, working the line of Republican succession. Uygur's framing: the file system isn't theoretical. It's a calendar.

Same Adelson family. Trump campaign donations. Pollard's flight. Vance's dinner. Uygur's argument is that "Republican vs Democrat" is the wrong frame; the right frame is "donor-class vs the rest of us." The pattern isn't a coincidence — it's an institution.

The Path Back: Turn Off, Vote Out, Amend

Uygur's prescription comes in three layers — what an individual does this week, what the electorate does next cycle, and what the country does this generation.

15 · Layer 1 — Personal 15 ·

Uygur cites TYT's tracking. In 2020, the dividing line for "gets news primarily from television" was 45 years old. By 2026, it has moved up to 50 — the audience aged with the medium. Under 50, you mostly get news from online. Above 50, mostly TV. His framing: if you're getting your news from television, you're not getting news. You're getting the propaganda the donor class is paying for.

16 · Layer 2 — Electoral 16 ·

The instruction is precise: don't vote across parties. Vote out your own party's incumbents in the primaries. The reason is that money flows to incumbents — defending an incumbent is cheaper than installing a challenger — so the donor class's leverage is highest at the incumbent layer.

The next president, Uygur argues, has to be "clean" by one strict definition: refuses corporate-PAC and foreign-government donations. He names two living examples — Ro Khanna on the Democratic side, Thomas Massie on the Republican side — as the type. The Justice Democrats' single rule was: no corporate PAC money. Twelve members of Congress eventually got in under that rule.

17 · Layer 3 — Constitutional 17 ·

This is Uygur's central structural claim, and the closer of the conversation. The Supreme Court rulings that turned money into protected speech — Buckley v. Valeo (1976), First National Bank v. Bellotti (1978), and Citizens United v. FEC (2010) — can only be overridden by constitutional amendment. The standard amendment path requires two-thirds of Congress, which won't happen because, in Uygur's framing, Congress is the captured branch.

Valeo(1976)、First National Bank v. Bellotti(1978)、Citizens United v. FEC(2010)——只能用宪法修正案推翻。

But the Constitution has a second path. Two-thirds of state legislatures can call an Article V convention. Three-quarters of states must then ratify any proposed amendment. Wolfpack — fightcorruption.us — has gotten five state legislatures to formally call for such a convention so far. The argument that a convention would "run away" with extreme amendments fails the ratification test: only an amendment with broad cross-state support clears the 3/4 threshold, and Uygur argues only one issue actually has that broad support — getting money out of politics.

Wolfpack(fightcorruption.us)目前已经让五个州的议会正式发起这一动议。

"The Constitution says you should do a political revolution every generation. The founding fathers told us how. Through amendments. So we got to giddy up. Mount up. Everybody put your boots on."

Open Questions: Where Uygur Won't Claim Certainty

The conversation's last hour is Uygur's catalog of "I don't know what happened" beats — moments where he flags a question he won't answer but won't drop. He's specific that he's not making accusations. The pattern is: official narrative, asked questions don't get answers, and he stays curious.

18 · Charlie Kirk's killing 18 · Charlie Kirk 遇害

Why didn't the rifle round produce the catastrophic exit wound the weapon's caliber would normally produce? Why did the alleged shooter appear in different clothing in adjacent surveillance frames? Officials said he changed clothes on the rooftop. Uygur: "I'm now asking 100,000 questions."

19 · The Iranian physicists 19 ·

Netanyahu has bragged on camera, Uygur cites, about Mossad assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists. One was shot in the head while picking up his children from kindergarten — a physics professor, no military role, killed in front of his kids "to send a message."

20 · Epstein's "suicide" 20 ·

Uygur predicted on air, before the official ruling: if the hallway camera works, it was suicide; if the hallway camera fails to record, it was murder. The hallway cameras failed. The guards were both off post. The cellmate had been moved out the night before. Uygur's read: "There's a 0% chance he hung himself." The Drop Site emails — Epstein corresponding with Ehud Barak about deals serving Israel — are his grounds for "intelligence asset, not American intelligence."

If donor money buys the politicians, and the politicians fund the wars, and the wars protect the donors' interests — at what point does an American voter still own the outcome of an American election?

What You Can Actually Do This Week

Uygur is direct. The structural fix is a generation's work — but the personal-action layer is small enough to start tomorrow.

读读《Justice Is Coming》

If the constitutional argument compels you. Chapters 4 and 5 walk through how the Supreme Court captured the government and the media.

Cenk Uygur's larger frame: the founding fathers built the amendment process into the Constitution because they expected this — every generation needing a structural reset. They handed the country a tool. The tool's been used 27 times. He's arguing it's time to use it again.
