Two children eligible for the draw, four children at home depending on what Katniss can carry out of the woods. Her father died in a mine explosion when she was eleven; she has been the household's hunter ever since. Gale, eighteen, faces his last Reaping today — his name is in the bowl forty-two times because of tesserae, the Capitol's grain-for-entries trade that buys families one year of survival in exchange for one more chance at the arena.

District 12 has won the Hunger Games twice in seventy-four years. The first victor is dead; Haymitch is the second. Twenty-three other District 12 children have been Reaped over the same span and have not come home. The math is on the Capitol's screens every night.

Mockingjays are accident-birds — the unintended cross-breed offspring of the Capitol's failed jabberjay surveillance program (engineered to memorize and repeat human speech, then released into the wild after the war when they became useless to the Capitol) and ordinary mockingbirds. The Capitol could not stop them existing. The Capitol does not, in 2008's reading, attach political weight to the bird. Madge does not either. Katniss does not. The pin is just a pin. It will not stay just a pin.

Prim has refused tesserae her entire life because Katniss has refused on her behalf — the only way an Everdeen daughter could buy fewer slips into that bowl. One slip. Katniss has done the math on every Reaping since she was twelve. One slip is supposed to be safe.

The three-finger salute is District 12's old gesture, used at funerals and at moments of farewell. The Capitol has no protocol for it. Effie tries to recover with applause. No one applauds. The cameras keep rolling.

The dandelion memory anchors the whole novel. The morning after Peeta's bread, Katniss saw a dandelion in the school yard and remembered her father teaching her which weeds were food. She has not been hungry the same way since. The Capitol is now putting her into an arena with the boy who taught her to look at the dandelion.

This is the last time Katniss sees District 12 as the girl who left it. The mockingjay pin is now over her heart, hidden under her Reaping clothes. The cameras catch her weeping for the cameras to see; she does not weep again until the arena.

Tributes arriving at the Capitol have eaten more in twenty-four hours than they have eaten in months at home. Katniss eats anyway, because hunger has taught her to. Peeta makes the strategic suggestion: they ought to be a team in front of the cameras, regardless of what they do in the arena. Katniss takes the suggestion, not yet understanding it is also him telling her something.

The Capitol's economy runs on the Districts' hunger. Children from coal-towns and orchards die in arenas to stage-manage that hunger as entertainment. Katniss does not yet have the language to put any of this; she just registers the cosmetics, and waves.

Cinna is on his first year as a stylist; he chose District 12 when every other rookie chose the Career districts. "I think your braid will work." He is the first Capitol-side adult who looks at Katniss as a person. The flames are technically harmless — a synthetic that burns cool against the cape lining. The image is what matters.

Career tributes are illegal in theory: Districts 1, 2, and 4 train children for the Reaping in academies that are technically against the Capitol's rules. The Capitol has not enforced the rule for decades — the Career pack makes for better television. The starvation tributes from the outer Districts know, walking onto the gym floor, who is most likely to kill them and who is most likely to be killed. The Career-pack social geometry is set before any tribute throws a knife.

Katniss does not yet understand what she has done. The score makes her a tribute the Capitol audience will track. It also makes her a tribute the Career pack will hunt first. Haymitch laughs out loud when he hears the number.

The Capitol audience now has a love story. Sponsors will pay double for star-crossed-lovers. Katniss, in her dressing room, does not yet know whether Peeta has staged it for sponsors or whether he means it. She slams him into a pile of urns and gets a cut on her hand. Haymitch is the one who explains: he made you look desirable. That is worth your life.

Cinna's last words to her: "Remember, girl on fire. I'm not allowed to bet, but if I could, my money would be on you." Then the tube closes. Cinna does not see her again.

The bloodbath is the Capitol's lowest-cost mass-elimination scene. Tributes who go for the supplies die. Tributes who run live longer. Katniss takes one calculated risk for the one bag — and the bag turns out to hold a sleeping bag, dried food, and the wire that will save her on Day 8. Calculation, not stupidity. The knife in the pack is the difference.

Katniss is good at the woods because she has lived in them since she was eleven. The Career pack is good at the cornucopia because they have trained on a replica since they were six. The arena is engineered to surface that contrast. The Gamemakers know what they have just put on screen.

Sponsor parachutes cost real Capitol money. Each gift Haymitch sends is calibrated to maximum dramatic effect at minimum cost. By skipping the water, he's both saving the budget for a moment that matters more — and signaling to Katniss that she has to read the audience too. She does not yet realize she is being trained mid-arena.

Arena weather is editorial. When the audience's attention drifts, the Gamemakers reach for the dial: a flood, a fire, a sudden cold front, a swarm. The fire on Day 3 is the first time Katniss sees the dial moved on her personally. It will not be the last.

Katniss has been a bow hunter since she was eleven; the silver bow is the first weapon in the arena that fits her hands. Tracker-jacker venom causes hallucinations strong enough that survivors lose hours. Katniss loses about a day to it.

Peeta's alliance with the Careers was always a feint. He has been steering them away from Katniss since the cornucopia — every move calibrated to keep her alive without telling her so. The interview line "I love her" was the audible half of a strategy whose silent half is this leg wound.

Katniss has been alone in the woods of District 12 for years; she trusts solitude. But the arena's solitude is being broadcast to twenty-four districts. Solitude here is a performance, and Haymitch is grading it.

District 11 is the agricultural district — orchards, grain fields. Tributes from D11 know harvest. Rue at twelve is faster up an apple tree than Katniss was at twelve. Her name is itself an herb — rue is one of the bitter herbs Cinna's stylist team carries in the Capitol's perfume kits. She smells, Katniss notes, like her own meadow.

The mockingjay-whistle alliance reads, in Book 1, as a tactical communication code. It will not become a symbol of anything beyond Katniss-and-Rue inside this novel. That is the discipline of the timeline.

Katniss is concussed by the blast and goes deaf in her left ear for days. The Career pack, returning to find their food gone, kills the D3 boy — Cato breaks his neck in front of the cameras. The pack is now starving. Their tactical advantage is their stockpile and their training; one of those two is gone.

Rue is the first child Katniss has watched die since her father. Marvel is the first person Katniss has ever killed. Both happen in the same minute. Katniss is sixteen.

Lullabies are not Capitol entertainment. The Gamemakers cut to commercial halfway through the song.

The Capitol does not edit the moment out. The Capitol does not yet know what to do with the moment. District 11 will know within ten minutes.

The Capitol has rules about sponsorship: only your own district may pay for your parachutes. District 11 has just put money against the Capitol's rule, on television, for a District 12 tribute. The Capitol does not punish them publicly. The Capitol takes notes. So does District 11.

The mechanism is the heart of Book 1. The Gamemakers are trying to engineer a love story to justify the audience's emotional investment in the District 12 pair. They expect the rule will produce a two-victor coronation that the Capitol can sell as romance. The book reveals what they did not plan for at the very end.

Peeta covered in mud is the first explicit hint that the alliance with the Careers had been protective from the start. He has been moving downstream toward Katniss for days. He is also dying.

The cave scenes are the Capitol audience's emotional climax. They are also the chapter where Katniss begins to lose track of which kisses are for cameras and which are not. Peeta, who has not been pretending, watches her decide. He does not push.

Foxface's strategy is the inverse of every other tribute's: she has not been seen on camera since Day 1. She has been stealing food, never killing, never approaching. The audience has no name for her — Katniss invented "Foxface." The Gamemakers have not been able to weather-dial her into a confrontation. The feast was the first moment they got within two meters of her.

Thresh chooses not to kill Katniss when killing her is permitted and would have given him an open run at the victor's crown. He does not articulate why except by Rue's name. The Capitol broadcasts the line. District 11 hears it.

Foxface dies because she has been brilliant. She trusted that the boy gathering the berries knew which were poisonous. He did not. Katniss empties Peeta's bag of berries into a pouch at her belt. She does not yet know why she keeps them.

The mutts are the Capitol's aesthetic obscenity at full power. Engineering predator animals with the recognizable eyes of children the audience has just watched die is a Capitol craft choice. Cato dies fighting them through the night.

The mercy is for Cato, who has tortured tributes through the arena. Katniss extends it because the alternative is letting the Capitol's mutts continue what the Capitol designed them to do. Mercy in this moment is the smaller of two cruelties. The cameras record it as mercy. Katniss does not yet know what she has begun.

The Capitol has changed the rules twice in twenty-four hours. The audience has been promised a love story. The Capitol now wants the love story to end in death. Katniss reaches into her belt pouch — the nightlock berries she lifted from Foxface's death scene.

This is the gambit. Two victors or no victors. The Capitol can have a story or no story. There is no third option, because two children have refused to give them one.

The Capitol blinked. The cameras saw the Capitol blink. Twenty-four districts saw the Capitol blink. The Capitol will spend the next year attempting to convince its own audience that the blink was a romance, not a defeat.

This is Snow's only on-page appearance in Book 1. He hands Katniss the crown. He does not speak again. The expression Katniss reads on his face — that the Capitol is not amused — is the entire Snow arc this novel produces. The villain is a rose-scented breath at a coronation. Books 2 and 3 will give him more lines. Book 1 gives him only this.

Haymitch is teaching Katniss the rule that will keep her alive between Books 1 and 2: when the Capitol can punish you for what you meant, you tell the Capitol you meant something else. Performance, in Panem, is the air supply.

The novel closes as Katniss steps off the train at District 12 — the same platform she left from, three weeks and one chapter ago, returning to a sister and a mother and a hunting partner who will not look at her the same way again. The Boy with the Bread, walking beside her, has just begun to understand which parts of the cave were performance. The Capitol, watching the homecoming on every screen in Panem, has just given two children a victory and made them both, for the first time, dangerous. The next book will name the danger. This one ends one second before the naming.
