Joe Rogan opens by reading the label on his phone — Ari the Wanderer. Shaffir has been gone seven months. Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador. No social media, two months of ads pre-recorded, an iPhone on a tripod by waterfalls. He says his brain "fired in a way it hadn't in so long." This is what he came back with.

Three sabbaticals now. The first was halfway — Ecuador with phone signal. The second was deeper. This one was the longest. He banked his podcast through July, then walked out. No social media. The only check-in was a once-a-month batched recording of ads and bumpers, filmed in fun places — a waterfall, the inauguration of Bolivia's first new president in twenty years.

Each trip's logistics make the next one possible.

Before vanishing, Shaffir recorded podcast ads two months ahead and stockpiled evergreen episodes through July. "You guys are set for two months. You don't need me." When the bank ran low, he'd find a waterfall in Sucre or a statue in Bolivia, set an iPhone on a tripod, talk to a cordless mic while pretending to talk to his phone. Self-financed remote production. No crew. No studio.

He describes coming back with a working brain in a way he can't fully name. Creative thoughts pouring out. His storytelling show — the one he was pushed out of in 2017 — fully reconceived on a mushroom trip in the jungle, prologue and all. The framing: when responsibilities drop for long enough, the constant inner management drops with them. You stop managing your thoughts. You start being yourself.

On mushrooms in Peru he looked at his father — a Holocaust survivor, almost 90, working as a docent at a Holocaust memorial — and saw him not as "the guy I grew up with" but as a man who once also started a new life by leaving everything. "What a cool guy." A 90-year-old who survived a war camp and now teaches inner-city kids what survival means. Shaffir's seven months were a luxury. His father's was something else.

The Controlled Substances Act was signed in 1970. For fifty-six years, every American conversation about psychedelics has happened underneath it. In the months Shaffir was gone, the structure started to crack — in Texas, of all places. Not because the science changed. Because a handful of people sat in rooms with state officials and made them listen.

Greg Abbott, Lt Gov Dan Patrick, and House Speaker Dustin Burrows. Texas allocated $50 million in state funding — the largest publicly-funded psychedelic research effort in U.S. history. The state most associated with hardline drug policy now leads federal research funding on a Schedule I psychedelic.

The Hubbard–Perry move with Texas leadership was a workaround: get hardliners to introduce it, so the soft target stops being the soft target.

On December 18, 2025, the Trump administration signed an executive order on medical-marijuana research. On April 23, 2026, the DOJ and DEA moved FDA-approved cannabis products and state-licensed medical marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III at the federal level. A broader Schedule III rescheduling for all cannabis is still in administrative hearing — that proceeding begins June 29, 2026. The historical echo: every president for fifty-six years inherited Nixon's classification. Obama could have done this. Biden could have done this. None did.

Shaffir tells the side-story almost in passing. A tourism-board guy in an Ecuadorian Amazon border town pitched ayahuasca tourism as the city's differentiator. Every other board member voted no — we don't want hippie backpackers becoming drug addicts here. The pitch: come on the trip yourselves first. One by one, board members took the ceremony. One by one, they came back voting yes. "You come once, you don't come back for a year." The shaman beats a slow drum through the night; if you drift too far, the drum pulls you back.

While Shaffir was hiking the Andes, the news was bombing Lebanon. He picked up most of it in fragments — "I'm not on the news, so I'm hearing stuff little by little" — which is how an outsider's eye sees a long war: the receipts come due all at once. Tanks left in Kabul. A 2007 disclosure about a 2001 memo. A reporter killed in southern Lebanon. A 1996 union murder in Colombia. The same shape, different costumes.

The reality: within days the Taliban had it all. The question Joe asks, and Shaffir echoes: was it incompetence, or was the equipment supposed to be there? Twenty years was long enough to park it in a field and drop a bomb on it. We didn't.

Wesley Clark's seven countries

In a 2007 Democracy Now! interview, retired General Wesley Clark described a Pentagon memo he was shown at the Joint Chiefs about ten days after 9/11: seven countries to be taken out in five years — Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Iran. Clark never read the memo himself; Coleman Hughes has pointed out that a historian wouldn't accept the testimony at face value. But the list described an unfolding that then unfolded. "They wanted to do it in five years. It took twenty-five."

Organisers counted 450,000 nationwide at peak, 170,000 in Tel Aviv alone. The protests vanished from international memory the morning the war started.

Ryan Grim's reporting on the IDF's killing of a Lebanese journalist: drones tracked her, a car was bombed in front of her, she fled into an abandoned building, the building was bombed for hours. During the strike, her contacts in Lebanon reached Israeli officials by phone — this is a journalist. The reply, according to text messages later surfaced: she works for Hezbollah, fuck you, you're naive. The Spark doesn't adjudicate the claim. It notes: in 2026, killing journalists in named locations has become reportable but not stoppable.

The civilisations that left written records aren't the only ones who built. The base layer of the walls in Cusco and Sacsayhuamán is built from massive polygonal blocks — some weighing hundreds of tonnes — fit so precisely that a sheet of paper won't pass between them. The geometry isn't decorative. It disperses earthquake energy laterally, so the wall doesn't fall. Sitting on top are smaller, stacked Inca-era stones. Above those, sixteenth-century Spanish facades. The facades have collapsed in earthquakes. The Inca stones have moved. The megaliths haven't budged.

Three quarried stones in Baalbek weigh more than 1,000 tons each, set several metres above ground, with smaller Roman structures built on top of them. The Romans had meticulous construction records — every column, aqueduct, road. They do not mention these stones. The largest unmoved stone known to be quarried by humans — the Hajar al-Hibla, "Stone of the Pregnant Woman" — is still in the quarry. Nobody has explained how the placed stones moved.

The underground city found by chicken hunt

Derinkuyu, in Cappadocia. In 1963, a homeowner renovating his basement broke through a wall and discovered a passage. Earlier accounts say chickens kept disappearing through a crevasse in the same area. The passage opens into a multi-level underground city carved out of volcanic rock — eighteen storeys deep, 85 metres down, ventilation shafts, water wells, stone wheel doors, capacity for roughly 20,000 people plus livestock. No surviving record of who built it. Hittite, Phrygian, early Christian — every theory is a guess.

Longyou's twenty-four caverns

In June 1992, four farmers in Longyou County, Zhejiang Province, drained five ponds in their village expecting to find fish. They found man-made caverns. Further investigation surfaced nineteen more — twenty-four in total, with engraved walls, soaring columns, and tool marks too uniform to be casual labour. Pottery in the deepest chambers dates to 206 BCE – 23 CE. The Han Chinese kept extensive written records for the entire period. There is no record of these caves. Nobody knows where the displaced stone went.

The list expands: Petra in Jordan, three storeys carved out of a single mountain face with no record of the displaced stone; Angkor Wat barely surviving the jungle; Nazca lines visible only from above, with AI satellite scans surfacing new ones; Hang Sơn Đoòng cave in Vietnam, big enough to hold its own clouds, found in 1991. Shaffir's punch line, after Joe lists three more: "how much shit like that is still out there?" The Spark's answer: 20,000 years removes almost everything. What's left isn't a complete record. It's the durable fraction.

Of every claim in two and a half hours, this one is the most testable. The Max Planck Institute for Human Development ran the study in 2022. The mechanism predates primates. The implication: your brain is currently running a routine you can't disable — and the routine is why a city park feels different than a city street, and why elk-hunting in cell-dead Montana makes Joe's brain "fire in a way it hadn't in so long."

Scientific Reports, 2022. Max Planck Institute for Human Development with University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf. 295 participants. Six minutes of recorded bird-song produced a measurable drop in anxiety and paranoia at medium effect size. Six minutes of recorded traffic noise produced a measurable rise in depression. The drop in anxiety worked on subjects who had lived their entire lives in dense urban environments with no regular contact with nature. The brain still ran the check.

Mammals have used ambient soundscape as a predator-detection system for roughly 200 million years — longer than primates have existed. Birds stop singing when something larger than they are moves through their territory. Continuous song means no large predator is present. Cessation of song is the warning. Your nervous system is wired to monitor the audio band continuously and to spike on silence. Your nervous system never updated this software. Listening for birds is not metaphor. It is a circuit.

On the elk-hunting mountain, no cell phone signal, no engines, no climate-control hum — only the song the circuit was built to monitor. Joe describes thoughts "pouring out" within hours. Shaffir says the same about the jungle. Central Park, by contrast, buys two days of sanity before it runs out — close, but not the real signal. The Spark's claim, narrow and precise: most adults are walking around with the predator-detection circuit firing all day because the soundscape never includes the song.

Shaffir is a single-issue voter on city parks. In New York he names two: Elizabeth Street Gardens, which Mayor Eric Adams committed to protecting and the next administration wants to flatten for low-income housing — even after the community surfaced an alternative site that holds more units. East River Park, which the city tried to take back from the community that built it. Central Park, which today's politics would never approve if it weren't already there. Green space doesn't generate cash. The brain doesn't care.

The chapter is structural, not just biographical. Shaffir is a case study in what happens when an industry's gatekeepers become irrelevant — and what the people who were kept gated build on the other side. His new show, The End, is the most personal stake in the conversation. Tom Segura's YMH Studios financed it. The network that pushed him out a decade ago doesn't meaningfully exist anymore.

February 18, 2010. The Lab at the Improv in Los Angeles. Six comedians, fourteen audience members, stories about psychedelic drugs. That's where This Is Not Happening was born. Joe remembers Shaffir running it for free at the time and asking him what are you doing? The format — comedians telling true stories instead of doing prepared sets — let writers develop material around a theme. Many of those stories became headlining bits. Some became specials.

By 2017, This Is Not Happening was a Comedy Central show — three seasons in, low-budget, launching careers. Shaffir paid for his own stand-up special (Double Negative) and brought it to Netflix. Comedy Central was contractually allowed nothing about this. They pushed Shaffir out as host anyway — Roy Wood Jr. took over for the fourth season, which then closed out the run. Joe — already three years into JRE, already huge — had offered to host it for free to keep the crew employed. The network said no. "They just wanted to fuck you," Joe says now. "Anyone I suggested, they said no."

Seven hour-long episodes, $29.99. Twenty-three comedians flown in to The Box in New York City. Custom claymation prologue by William Child. A Duncan Trussell theme song about Taylor Swift being a 15,000-year-old vampire. According to Shaffir, day-one revenue exceeded the entire production budget. By 2026, Comedy Central no longer functions as the production entity that pushed him out.

The job those gatekeepers did was distribution and validation. We decide who is on the list. Both functions collapsed when YouTube and Spotify cut out distribution and when audiences started trusting hosts more than networks. The cabs-and-Uber analogy gets used and then qualified: yes, the cabs overreached and Uber came in; and yes, Uber will eventually overreach and the next thing will eat it. The structural point survives: when curators gatekeep too hard, the people they kept out build the next layer without them.
那群把关人原本只做两件事：分发，和盖章。"名单由我们决定。" YouTube 和 Spotify 把"分发"这一头砍掉了；观众开始比起电视网更相信主播本人，"盖章"那头也塌了。乔把这个跟出租车和 Uber 的比喻拿出来用，又自己加了一句：出租车业把规则搞过了头，Uber 进来；Uber 自己迟早也会搞过头，下一波再把它吃掉。但这一节真正的论点不变：把关人卡得太死，被卡在外面的人会在没有他们的情况下，自己盖出下一层。

Shaffir's contrast: the network checklist demanded categories (here are the gays — pick one of seven; here are the Black comedians — pick three). The version of the show he and Eric Abrams built reaches further by going for diversity of experience instead. A Black woman in Indianapolis (Miss Pat). A Black comic from Houston with prison stories (Ali Siddiq). Gary Owen, whose biography is closer to Ali's than to Shaffir's. The End also pays comedians directly with backend points — a model networks never offered. The list isn't in Los Angeles. The work to find it is the difference.

Across ten countries, in conversations with people who didn't recognise him, Shaffir tested one sentence: I am a stand-up comedian for a living. Ten countries, ten times, the same response — disbelief, then delight. "That's so cool. Grandma, come here, this guy does stand-up like you mean with a microphone?" It is, he says, the coolest job a stranger can hear about, anywhere on earth.

Even after 155 minutes of roaming through drug policy and forever wars and stones nobody built, this is the only thing both men land on without complication. "We're all just coming up with a better dick joke." And, somehow, it is the dignified answer.
