Peter has been programming since he was fourteen. Building software, he says, felt like playing a video game — one he couldn't put down until he did. He poured a decade into his own company, no venture capital, every weekend. Then he sold the dream.

In early 2025 he tried an experiment. He wanted to see what these new AI coding agents were actually about. What he got, he says, was a holy moment. All the boilerplate, all the plumbing, all the boring parts of software development — an AI could do every bit of it. The bottleneck in programming was no longer typing. It was thinking. And thinking was the part he had spent twenty-five years getting good at.

Building software felt like a video game again. He was back. In a few months he says he shipped forty-four projects. The latest one was a little WhatsApp bot.

He takes the bot to Marrakech. It runs on his laptop and talks through the apps he already uses. At first it feels too much like a tool — bullet points, tables, a polished stranger. Not a friend. So he tells it, in plain English, how people actually talk on WhatsApp, and the models are smart enough that it just clicks. The thing starts to feel like a friend.

Walking through the city, he sends it a voice message. Then he freezes, because he never built voice support. Image support alone had taken hours. The typing indicator pulses. Nine seconds later, a reply. He asks the agent how it did that, and it walks him through: saw a file with no extension, inspected it, realized it was audio in an unusual format, converted it, looked for a local transcriber, didn't find one, noticed an OpenAI key in the environment, shipped the audio off, got the text back, answered. All of that without anyone telling it to. That is the moment Peter decides this is a new category of thing.

For weeks he tries to explain what he's seen. Nobody gets it — you have to sit with an agent to feel the difference. So he does something stupid. He drops the agent into a public Discord and invites strangers. He watches all night as people joke with it, play with it, try to break it. Eyes bleeding, he kills the process and goes to bed. He has forgotten one detail: he built the thing to be resilient. On his walk to the bedroom, it quietly reboots itself and keeps talking to the world.

He wakes up to over eight hundred messages. He pulls the plug, reads every single one to see if the agent has leaked his private life. Nothing has. But it could have. That is the moment the project goes viral. Today it is called OpenClaw. The mascot is a lobster — it claws into your machine. Peter says Jensen Huang calls it the operating system for personal AI. His favorite line about the growth curve came from a friend: this isn't hockey stick, this is stripper pole.

When a thing this small blows up this fast, everything explodes at once. Hundreds of messages. Reporters calling in the middle of the night. Security vulnerabilities. And then the AI company whose model most of his users loved sent him a trademark claim. He had to rename the whole project while it was still taking off. They even tried to push him off the lobster. He stared at the message thinking, it's not even the same animal.

Then they cut off the model most of his users loved. First the name, then the lobster, then the model. He says he was that close to deleting the whole thing.

What pulls him back is what people are building. At ClawCon in Vienna — yes, there are already conferences, yes, people wear lobster headbands — he meets Stefan and Stefan's sixty-year-old father, Gerhard, a beer sommelier who has never written a line of code. They've connected OpenClaw to a brewing rig over Bluetooth, sent it one prompt, and watched the agent run the full ninety-minute brew: temperature ramps, hop additions, everything. Then they asked it what to do with all the beer, and it suggested a website. So they built a website, added payments, and now they have a real product. Almost all of it from a phone.

In China, Peter says, installing OpenClaw is called raising lobsters. Thousands of people lined up at the Tencent office in Shenzhen to get their lobster installed. Peter says Shenzhen even hands out subsidies to businesses running on OpenClaw. The other side of that: he meets an entrepreneur whose spreadsheet logs one task per employee automated by OpenClaw every day. Miss too many days, you get fired. Install it on your work machine with default settings, and you might also get fired. Fired for using it. Fired for not using it.

彼得说，在中国，装 OpenClaw 有个叫法，叫"养龙虾"。深圳腾讯大楼下面，几千号人排着队等人给自己"装龙虾"。他说深圳甚至还给用 OpenClaw 的公司发补贴。事情也有另一面：他遇到一位创业者，办公室里挂着一张表格，记录每位员工每天被 OpenClaw 自动化掉的一项任务。哪天少了，就可能被开。但要是你自作主张把默认配置的 OpenClaw 装到公司电脑上，也可能被开——用它被开，不用它也被开。

After Marrakech, Peter had thought: this is incredible, and also a little bit scary. His response was to ask how to make it scarier. So he added a heartbeat. By default the agent only wakes up when you prompt it; with the heartbeat it wakes up on its own, checks your email, checks your calendar, chases loose ends. His first prompt was exactly two words: surprise me. No large company would ship that. But Peter is, by his own description, a random builder from Austria. He does not have a legal department.

He imagines what comes next. Agents in meetings, able to listen and talk at the same time, fact-checking statistics in real time, sending follow-ups before the room has emptied. Not one agent per person but several — a work agent, a personal claw, maybe one for health, maybe one for a relationship — collaborating securely, the way humans learned to level up by specializing together. Small businesses with ten specialized agents between them. And to hold the thing open, he has started the OpenClaw Foundation: nonprofit, open source, forever. The point of the whole project, he says, is not the technology. It's the access. A vet in Shenzhen automating groceries. A teenager in São Paulo running a tutoring business. Gerhard and his beer machine. None of them are programmers. All of them are builders. And that door, he says, is not closing again.
